About

Based out of Charlottesville, Virginia, I am interested in the qualitative characteristics that differentiate great businesses from the merely mediocre.

Wal-mart sets itself apart with the lowest prices.  Coca-Cola offers a ‘feel good’ beverage experience.

Are these equally great businesses though?  If a great business is one you wouldn’t want to compete with, then yes, they are both great.

But if a great business is one with high profit margins and high returns on invested capital, then Coca-Cola is far and away the better business.

Without a doubt, a great business–at the very least–needs to be reasonably profitable and its future relatively certain.  But can we say more?  That is what our journey on this blog will try to find out.
